If you have a flat tire, you can fix it by changing it with a spare tire. Here's how to do it:
-
Find a safe location to change the tire. If you are on the side of a busy road, try to pull as far off the road as possible and turn on your hazard lights. If you are in a parking lot or on a quieter road, you can change the tire there.
-
Locate the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench in your car. In most cars, these can be found in the trunk or underneath the car.
-
Loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Do not remove them yet. Use the lug wrench to turn the lug nuts counterclockwise to loosen them.
-
Position the jack under the car. Consult your owner's manual to find the proper jacking point for your car.
-
Lift the car off the ground using the jack. Turn the jack handle clockwise to lift the car.
-
Remove the lug nuts and take the flat tire off. Place the flat tire under the car, near the jack, in case the jack fails.
-
Put the spare tire on the car. Line up the holes in the spare tire with the lug bolts on the car.
-
Hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the tire.
-
Lower the car back to the ground. Turn the jack handle counterclockwise to lower the car.
-
Tighten the lug nuts. Use the lug wrench to turn the lug nuts clockwise to tighten them.
-
Replace the flat tire as soon as possible. A spare tire is not meant to be driven on for long distances or at high speeds.
It's important to use caution when changing a tire, as the car can fall off the jack if not properly supported. If you are unsure how to change a tire or do not feel comfortable doing it, it is recommended to call a professional or roadside assistance.
